Progressive Enhancement for Web Design

The ultimate reason for most businesses that have a website is to attract as many viewers as possible which results in selling their products.

Web designers keep this in mind when a client approaches them to create a website design for their company. To achieve this goal the site has to be accessed by as many visitors as possible and then to keep them on the site.

For many years website designers have used graceful degradation knowing that users who visit the website, regardless of what browser they use; would still be able to ‘view’ the content. However, a visitor who clicks on to the site using one of the older browser versions may not get the same view and consequently click away.

Graceful degradation is used by many web designers as it focuses on all the latest and the most popular browsers. Progressive Enhancement is not used by many website design companies purely because they may not fully comprehend how it works and realise the benefits in the ever evolving world of technology. Building a web design using progressive enhancement is the way to ensure all viewers can read the content clearly, even ones viewing through old browsers.

The website design is important and we all know that. Every business wants their website to stand out and have that ‘wow factor’, but equally important is the content. It is the content of a website that potential customers need to see clearly to convince or persuade them to make a purchase.

Progressive Enhancement focuses more on the content and can be viewed on old browsers and and most mobile browsers.

Take a look at the general public, if you walked round a shopping centre or went in to a cafĂ© or restaurant, or any public place; you will see them using mobile phones/ ipods etc….nowadays people access the internet from these devices . Even mobiles that do not support CSS or JavaScript can still see the content of a site. As technology evolves at a phenomenal rate most smart phones of today have at least one of these.

It is a foregone conclusion that all mobile devices will soon have the facility to access the internet and will be used as frequently as using a computer. We don’t have to rush home to make a call from our land lines any more and we don’t have to be sitting in front of a computer to access the internet.
